School Education System in Singapore
Named amongst the best countries to study abroad, Singapore has always been an ideal study destination for students from all over the world. Some of the reasons are high standards of teaching, top institutions and affordable costs.

The Ministry of Education, Singapore aims to “help students discover and make the best of their own talents, to help them realise their full potential, and develop a passion for lifelong learning”.

Singapore's education system is divided into 4 levels: Pre-School, Primary, Secondary and Post-Secondary.

There are Public and Private or International schools in Singapore.

International students who wish to study in a Singapore public school need to apply for a Student’s Pass unless they hold a Dependant’s Pass or an Immigration Exemption Order.

The application should be submitted 6 month in advance of the new academic year. Foreign students can get the place after the Singapore citizens and residents with results announced in October.

After the Year 1 students are obliged to pass the AEIS exam which includes English language and mathematics.

By the end of primary school students have to pass the PSLE exam to enter secondary school.

International or private schools may offer an education pathway and curriculum that are following some other countries (GB, Australia, USA, Germany, etc). This is especially beneficial if your children have been educated in a language other than English or they plan to continue education in another country.

Each school has its own admission criteria and academic calendar with some start in August and some in January.

Most of the International schools use IPC / IMYC (International Primary Curriculum / International Middle Year Curriculum) or IB (International Baccalaureate) programs.

In International schools children don’t have to pass the PSLE exam and can enter the secondary school by AEIS exam results.

Secondary Level

Usually, the secondary level in Singapore Education System lasts for 6 years but the duration can vary according to the capabilities of the students. Completing the primary level, students pick the stream they are most interested in.

For students who have opted Special and Express courses will be receiving the General Certificate of Education ‘Ordinary’ Level (GCE ‘O’ Level) or IGCSE for international schools.

Whereas Normal course students can choose between Normal Academic and Normal Technical and will receive GCE ‘N’ Level certificate. Both the certificates will be given at the end of the 4th year of secondary school.

There are four tracks or streams offered at the secondary level in Singapore Schools and these streams are Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical), Integrated Program and Express.
